INTEGRATING Purpose, Passion, and Prosperity: Juneteenth Reflection on Freedom

Every year, Juneteenth invites us to pause and reflect on the meaning of freedom. We honor the resilience, courage, and determination of those who persevered through unimaginable obstacles while holding onto hope for a brighter future.

As I reflect on Juneteenth this year, I am reminded that freedom takes many forms.

Freedom is the ability to learn.

Freedom is the ability to dream.

Freedom is the ability to create.

Freedom is the ability to build.

Freedom is the ability to choose.

For many educators, freedom also includes the opportunity to leverage their knowledge, talents, and expertise beyond traditional employment. It includes the ability to create additional streams of income, pursue entrepreneurship, and build a legacy that extends beyond the classroom.

This perspective aligns perfectly with my 2026 Word of the Year: INTEGRATE.

Last year, my word was ALIGN. I focused on bringing my priorities, values, and commitments into greater harmony. This year, I have moved beyond alignment into integration.

Integration is where purpose meets action.

Integration is where passion meets opportunity.

Integration is where gifts meet service.

Integration is where knowledge meets entrepreneurship.

For much of my career, I believed my calling was confined to educational leadership, teaching, training, and advocacy. Over time, I discovered that my experiences, expertise, and passion could be integrated into multiple avenues of impact. Writing books, developing curriculum, consulting, speaking, coaching, and creating educational resources became extensions of my purpose rather than distractions from it.

I did not have to choose between serving children and families or building a business. I could do both.

I did not have to choose between making a difference and generating income. I could do both.

I did not have to separate purpose from prosperity. I could integrate them.
