Integrating for the Future: Why Early Childhood Education Requires both Curriculum and Technology

Each year, I choose a word that helps guide my leadership, decision-making, and vision for the future. My word for this year is INTEGRATE.

To me, integration is about bringing together the best of what we know, what we value, and what is possible. It is about building bridges rather than creating divisions. It’s about connecting people, ideas, systems, and solutions in ways that create greater impact.

As I reflect on the future of early childhood education, I can think of no better word to describe the moment we are in right now.

For the majority of my career, my mission has been simple: empower educators with the tools, resources, and confidence they need to help every child thrive.

Throughout my journey as an entrepreneur, advocate, educator, and curriculum developer, my focus has remained on supporting early childhood professionals as they build impactful learning environments for families and children. During this time, I have observed the escalating pressures on educators, who must balance vital instructional work with extensive responsibilities in lesson planning, assessment, documentation, family outreach, and compliance.

The challenge is not a lack of commitment. The challenge is capacity.

Too many educators are spending valuable time on administrative tasks when they could be focused on what matters most: teaching, nurturing, observing, encouraging, and inspiring children.

That is why I am excited to share a major step forward in our journey.

A New Chapter for WINGS Curriculum®

My company, Ideal Early Learning, LLC, Creator of WINGS Curriculum® has officially partnered with illumine, an innovative early childhood education technology platform, to create a more integrated experience for educators and programs.

This partnership is not simply about adding technology. It’s about integrating curriculum, assessment, family engagement, documentation, and program support into a more seamless experience for early learning professionals. It’s about helping educators spend less time navigating systems and more time engaging with children. This partnership is about helping programs work smarter without compromising quality.

Most importantly, it’s about helping children and families benefit from stronger, more connected early learning environments.

When I created WINGS Curriculum® and published the first edition in 2009, technology was limited. Stan Lee, American comic book writer, editor, publisher, and producer of Timely Comics, which later became Marvel Comics, often reflected that his creations were limited by the technology of his time. It was quite impressive when superhero fans, like my family and me, were able to experience the digital evolution of our favorite characters.

A Thoughtful Approach to AI

As conversations about artificial intelligence (AI) continue to evolve, I believe the early childhood education field has both an opportunity and a responsibility to lead thoughtfully. The goal is not to replace educators. The goal is to support them.

The expertise, relationships, professional judgment, cultural responsiveness, and human connection that educators bring to children every day cannot be replicated by technology - nor should they be.

Instead, technology should help reduce administrative burden, streamline routine processes, strengthen communication, and provide useful insights that allow educators to focus on the work that only humans can do.

This perspective aligns with the broader direction emerging across the early childhood sector, where leaders continue to emphasize strengthening workforce effectiveness, family engagement, and program quality while keeping children and relationships at the center of decision-making.

Technology should support the mission—not become the mission.

Integrating Innovation with Our Values

As WINGS continues to grow, our commitment remains unchanged.

We remain dedicated to:

  • Developmentally appropriate practice

  • Family engagement and partnership

  • Equity and inclusion

  • Educator empowerment

  • High-quality early learning experiences

  • Child-centered teaching and learning

Innovation should strengthen these values—not compete with them.

This is why I am so excited about this partnership. It allows us to integrate innovation with purpose, technology with relationships, and efficiency with excellence.

Introducing the Early Learning Innovation Cohort

This week, we are inviting a select group of early learning programs to join our inaugural Early Learning Innovation Cohort.

This cohort is designed for leaders of programs using WINGS Curriculum, who are curious about the future, committed to continuous improvement, and interested in exploring how curriculum and technology can work together to better serve children, families, and educators.

Participants will receive early access to innovative tools, personalized support, and opportunities to help shape future enhancements.

More importantly, they will join a community of leaders helping to define what responsible innovation looks like in early childhood education.

The Future Is Integration

I am incredibly grateful to the teams at my company, Ideal Early Learning LLC and illumine who helped bring this vision to life.

As I look ahead, I believe the future of early childhood education is not curriculum or technology. It is not innovation or relationships. It is not efficiency or quality. It is the thoughtful integration of these elements in service of children, families, and educators.

This partnership demonstrates what INTEGRATE means to me. And that is the future I am excited to help build.
