Celebrating Legacy and Leadership with Albany State University

The Dr. Bisa Foundation recently had the honor of joining Albany State University (ASU) in Albany, Georgia for a celebratory weekend. The institution's weeklong Founder's Day festivities paid tribute to its late Founder, Dr. Joseph Winthrop Holley, and welcomed its new President, Dr. Robert O. Scott. The Dr. Bisa Foundation also proudly supported the 2026 ASU Blue and Gold Scholarship Gala as a table sponsor, advancing our mission to support higher education. Being part of these meaningful moments reminded me why investing in education and honoring leadership matters deeply.

Honoring the Vision of Dr. Joseph Winthrop Holley

Dr. Joseph Winthrop Holley founded Albany State University in 1903 with a vision to provide quality education to African American students during a time when opportunities were limited. His commitment to education and community upliftment laid a foundation that continues to inspire generations. ASU's annual Founder's Day festivities include a series of events highlighting his lasting achievements and the institution’s growth.

During the festivities, I reflected on how Dr. Holley’s work transcended education. He built a community where students could thrive despite social and economic challenges. His legacy is a reminder that education is not just about academics but about creating opportunities for empowerment and change.

The year's celebratory events featured speeches from alumni who shared personal stories of how ASU shaped their lives, including my childhood associate and fellow alum Dr. Ontario S. Wooden, who delivered the Founder's Day Convocation keynote and now serves as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at North Carolina Central University. These testimonials made it clear that Dr. Holley’s vision is alive in every classroom and campus corner. It was moving to see how his dedication continues to impact students and ASU alumni today.

Welcoming Dr. Robert O. Scott as President

Founders Week also marked the introduction of Dr. Robert O. Scott as Albany State University’s new President. Dr. Scott brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the university’s leadership. His commitment to academic excellence and student success aligns perfectly with my foundation’s goals.

Dr. Scott’s vision focuses on expanding access to education, enhancing campus resources, and strengthening community partnerships. His leadership promises to build on the strong foundation laid by Dr. Holley while addressing the challenges of modern higher education.

Meeting Dr. Scott and hearing his plans reinforced my confidence in ASU’s future. It’s clear that the university is in capable hands, and the partnership between the Dr. Bisa Foundation and ASU will continue to grow stronger. It's exciting to welcome him and his family to my hometown and our beloved HBCU!

Supporting College Students and Academic Success

One of the highlights of the week's festivities was the 2026 ASU Blue and Gold Scholarship Gala. The Dr. Bisa Foundation proudly serves as an annual Table Sponsor for this important event. The gala raises funds to provide scholarships for deserving students, helping to reduce financial barriers to higher education.

Scholarships like those supported by the gala make a tangible difference. They allow students to focus on their studies without the constant worry of tuition costs. Many recipients go on to become leaders in their fields, giving back to their communities in meaningful ways.

At the gala, I had the chance to meet and hear from several scholarship recipients. Their stories were inspiring and reminded me of the challenges of balancing work, family, and school, driven by a desire to succeed and make a positive impact. Supporting these students is one of the most rewarding parts of our foundation’s work.

The event also brought together donors, faculty, and community members, creating a network of support around ASU students. This collective effort strengthens the university’s ability to serve its mission and helps ensure more students can access higher education.

Why Supporting Higher Education Matters

Being part of these ASU festivities reminded me why supporting higher education is so important. Education opens doors, builds confidence, and creates opportunities that can change lives. Nonprofits like ours play a crucial role in making education accessible, especially for students who face financial or social obstacles.

By investing in scholarships and university programs, donors help create a ripple effect. Students who receive support often become community leaders, mentors, and advocates for future generations. This cycle of giving and growth strengthens communities and builds a brighter future.

Our partnership with Albany State University is a clear example of how focused support can make a difference. Honoring past leaders, welcoming new ones, and investing in students all contribute to a thriving educational environment.

Continuing the Journey Together

The celebration at Albany State University was more than a tribute; it was a call to action. It reminded me that legacy and leadership are ongoing efforts. Supporting education requires commitment, collaboration, and a shared vision for the future.

As donors, we have the power to shape that future. By continuing to support initiatives like the ASI Blue and Gold Scholarship Gala, we help ensure students have the resources they need to succeed. We also honor the vision of leaders like Dr. Holley and embrace the promise of new leadership with Dr. Scott.

I encourage everyone who values education to consider how they can contribute. Whether through donations, volunteering, or advocacy, every effort counts. Together, we can build on the strong foundation at Albany State University and help more students reach their potential. I concur with Dr. Wooden, as he shared during his convocation address... ASU has served as a "launchpad" for many of us. I believe in paying it forward.

Supporting higher education is an investment in people, communities, and the future. The Dr. Bisa Foundation is proud to stand with Albany State University in this mission, and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve together.
